In the new millennium we have seen much progress in the world but little in the management of chronic illness and preventing disease.  I know all too well when faced with a cancer diagnosis the desperate need for information and the research that ensues from the time you hear “You have cancer.”  Therefore, I have compiled a list of herbals, nutraceuticals and alternative therapies known to help with many chronic illnesses.  

Educating yourself on these products is essential before you would “dive in” and self treat.  Managing any illness in which you seek an alternative and/or complimenting chosen treatment of conventional is a huge step.  Many herbals help to ease side effects of drugs and some can help prevent the onset of some diseases and/or make it more manageable.  Obviously taking any pill without a “life change” is not going to be a magic bullet and discussing this with your healthcare provider is the first step.

Vitamins are essential for a healthy body.  The human body requires 13 different vitamins: vitamin A, vitamin C, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, Vitamin K and the various B vitamins (biotin, folate, niacin, pantothenic acid, riboflavin, vitamin B-6 and vitamin B-12).

Minerals are vital nutrients the body uses in small amounts to work properly. Minerals are necessary to control body fluids inside and outside the cell wall and aid the process of converting food into energy. There are seven essential minerals: calcium, iron, magnesium, phosphorus, potassium, sodium, and sulfur. These seven minerals can not be created by the body; they must be ingested either through food or supplementation.

While most of us know that good nutrition is vital in helping us feel our best and reach our optimal health; finding time to eat a balanced diet on a daily basis seems an arduous task in this fast-paced society.  In this age of fast food and nutrient deficient diets it is often common to be missing some of these in your diet.  Humans can produce 10 of the 20 amino acids. The others must be supplied in the foods we consume. Failure to obtain enough of even 1 of the 10 essential amino acids, those that we cannot make, results in the breakdown of the body's proteins, muscle and more.  The human body does not store excess amino acids for later use; the amino acids must be in your daily food consumption.

There are a vast amount of products available to us and scores of new ones being introduced daily.  It is nearly impossible to keep up to date with this information and to learn all of the uses for these products.  To follow is a brief description of some products most commonly used today.  Many herbals/nutraceuticals can enhance your life and your health but also remember many of these can interfere with drugs and in some cases this can be life threatening.  If any of the products seem of interest to you, please speak with your healthcare provider to determine if they are safe for you.
